Best Sewing Machine

This machine was bought as a Christmas present for me. What firstly surprised me was this machine has to be connected to the computer or it will NOT embroider. All embroidery interacts with the computer. The first machine broke and Singer recommended it be replaced (this is after I waited forever to get help by phone). The replacement machine did “so-so” embroidery as I was not impressed with the final product of embroidery. I found the placement of presser foot lever and working on the bed of the machine was extremely awkward. The hoop had to be screwed on and off. When I tried normal sewing, kept getting thread errors and found out through Singer (another long wait on phone) the bobbin case was defective and should be replaced. This was the second machine. Was not interested in a third try. Defective machine was returned. The Singer was an immense source of frustration. Sewing should be a creative pleasurable experience and not a frustrating experience. Would I recommend this Singer? Only if you are extremely computer savvy, don’t really need a tutorial, are used to awkward Singers, and not interested in a user-friendly machine. Bought the Brother 700II with the USB port and this embroidery machine has been an embroiderer’s dream. The practice embroidery between the Singer and the Brother was like night and day. Give me a Brother any day of the week. I gave this machine a 2-star review as I was in a kind mood. And, by the way, I have been sewing for almost 50 years so am not new to sewing. Also, my husband was a computer programmer and his trying to “help” me figure things out with the Futura was a challenge to him too. I got this machine for Xmas last year after reading hundreds of reviews for different machines. I definitely wanted a manual sewing machine (after hearing/reading about lots of problems with the computerized), one could go through some heavy materials- particularly fleece, and wasn’t horribly fussy to deal with.

In general, it’s easy to use and works really well. It’s easy to thread normally (I can’t figure out the automatic threader).

Sometimes, as with most manuals, the needle will skip. You really need to listen for problems with the bobbin and stop as soon as you hear it. Sometimes the bobbin doesn’t catch quite right and it gets itself tangled in the casing. If this happens, you’ll have to really pull gently to get your project to move up enough to carefully cut the threads out. Not a huge deal, just something to be aware of.

The only real complaint I have about it is the underpass under the arm is much too small to do any enormous projects (like a bedspread).

If you buy the case with this, as I did, be aware that the case does not snuggly fit the machine and the machine can bounce around and some of the delicate metal parts on the top can bend. This happened once when I put it on the floor of my car to transport it to a friend’s house to do some work. I bought this machine a couple of weeks ago. It is an upgrade for me from a VERY basic Brother machine. I bought mine at a sewing machine store; actually cheaper than Amazon and I get their expertise/service.

One major feature I was looking for in my new machine is speed control. I am teaching my daughter to sew; this machine can be set to sew very very ssssslllloooww. Great when trying to teach a nine year old. Threading is pretty simple; there is a nifty automatic needle threader. I’m using it but threading a machine needle was never a big deal for me. I also like the automatic needle up feature. On every machine I ever used previously, I had to turn the wheel when done sewing a line to raise the needle. This machine does it automatically.

This Brother makes a very nice buttonhole; not as nice perhaps as a machine twice its price but still, just fine. It has this neat buttonhole foot in which you put your desired button in the back and it uses that button to automatically make the proper sized buttonhole. All in one step. This is WAY better than my old machine.

The bobbin is a top-drop-in. No more bringing up the loop, just put in in and sew.

One feature I’ve yet to use is a front stop/go control button. I guess that if you didn’t want to or couldn’t use a foot pedal you could use this button instead. I can see it being nice for buttonholes; you just position your fabric, push the “go” button, and it makes all the side of the buttonhole and stops automatically.

This machine trys to make things oops-proof. If you’ve ever jambed your machine because you started sewing with the presser foot up, well, that can’t happen with this machine. If things aren’t “right”, it will give you an error beep.

Another nice feature is that the machine automatically sets an “ideal” stitch length/width. You can overide it but for the most part, the defalt is perfect, especially with the decorative stitches.

There are several decorative stiches; I haven’t quite figured out the best way to put them to use but that’s just my own lack of creativity.

One last nice feature is a built-in foot holder. In front of the free-arm is a flip-down compartment that has molded, labeled spots for all your feet. It comes with a standard foot, zipper foot, blind hem stitch foot, decorative stitching foot, overlock foot, button attacher foot, and buttonhole foot. Also in the compartment is a molded space for a seam ripper and 4 bobbins (included). I’ve found it nice to have all these feet in one spot. I have a couple specialty feet from my old Brother machine and they fit and work just fine on my new one. An added plus.

One note; this machine takes bobbins that are a bit thicker than older ones. Buy a bunch of new ones; they say old ones won’t work.

All in all, I’m very happy. I’m glad I went with this model and would buy again.

Second, I love the machine! I have never sewed before and with a little “fiddling”, I was able to figure it out and start sewing. The manual isn’t perfect for someone who has NEVER used a machine before, but I’m sure it is more that enough for anyone who has. The machine is easy to use and has a lot of stitch options. It has all of the attachments and spare parts that you need. I would DEFINITELY recommend it to other beginners!

It’s been 30 years since I even touched a sewing machine. Within 48 hours of receiving this one, I’ve already completed 3 projects! The manual has easy-to-follow Quick Start guides. There is also a very helpful instructional dvd, which shows steps for set-up. The machine runs like a dream. I’ve already used 4 of the “special” stitches.
